We have been getting some much needed rain recently - a little over 5 inches for the year - last year out total was 12 inches. Lately it has been more mist that respectable rain, but any time we can keep the ground damp is a positive for the flora.
Speaking of flora, the Agarita (Berberis trifoliata)is in full bloom - maybe we will have a good year and the plants will produce lots of berries for our jelly making. The Elbow Bush (Forestiera pubescens) are leafing out and will be in bloom and produce the purple berries for the birds and can be eaten with chewing gum to make bubble gum. No sign of flower on the Texas Redbud, but I have seen Henry Elfin's around so they will be blooming soon. The ranch is covered in wildflower rosettes. As long as we continue to get rain, it will be another year of the ranch covered in wildflowers.
The only sign of spring was a sighting of three Purple Martin last week that have not returned. I have finished setting my bird nest boxes, and a Bewick's Wren has already will the box almost to the top with sticks. Black-crested Titmice are testing the boxes with small amounts of lichen in the bottom of a few boxes. Still need to set three more new boxes and I will have 20 out. Yesterday while sitting in the Great Room, a saw the front yard feeder area explode with birds and one male Cardinal hit the front window, landing on the porch. While it looked to have had a serious hit, suddenly a Cooper's Hawk swooped in and carried the still stunned Cardinal off. More Pyrrhuloxia are showing up - had three yesterday. And just a few minutes ago a Sharp-shinned Hawk scattered the birds.
Rancho Cardinalis is located in the Texas Hill Country outside the village of Center Point that rests on the Guadalupe River. We acquired the ranch in 2005, built temporary living quarters in 2006 and our home in 2009. Our ranch is managed under a State wildlife plan. The focus is on Near-Artic and Neo-Tropical migratory & breeding Hill County birds. We also manage for small mammals and butterflies. The ranch is named after our most abundant bird – Northern Cardinal - cardinalis

Nest Box Renovations
We have 16 nest boxes on the ranch and after last year's drought and intense heat, well they needed to be repaired. Plus last year we had several predator attack on nest boxes and lost a few birds as a result of the attacks. We had taken some precautions to guard against predators, but they were not enough. So I am in the process of pulling every nest box, replacing old or rotten wood and installing a 3x3 inch predator block. I am also adding a 2 foot stove pipe below the nest with a 16 inch inverted cone about it to stop animals like squirrels, ringtails, and raccoons from climbing up the pole holding the nest box.
Put up the Martin house last week and plan to add a second pole with Gourds to see if I can attract some new birds.
Bird are emptying the feeders almost daily. There is so little natural food out there that birds need this supplemental feeding. My grassland 10 transect censuses earlier this week was way down from previous years. I'm not sure where the birds are, but not out on the ranch. I had 20-30 birds at the house feeders all today. My other feeders out on the ranch are also emptying daily. You get close to a feeder and you will find birds. We just happen to get more at the ranch house due to the Oasis.
